The second aircraft in Saab’s GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) program successfully completed its first flight recently, taking off January 3 from Saab’s airfield in Linkoping, Sweden. The flight lasted 2 hours 54 minutes, and Saab noted that the feat demonstrated the “kind of efficiency that signifies Saab.” Back in November 2015, the United Arab Emirates awarded Saab a contract to develop and produce two GlobalEye systems.

    Serving Multipe Roles

Based on a modified Bombardier Global 6000 aircraft equipped with such advanced sensors as Erieye ER airborne radar, Saab says GlobalEye offers “extended detection range, endurance, and the ability to perform multiple roles” from one platform. Those roles include search and rescue tasks, border surveillance, and military operations, says Saab. The UAE is serving as the launch partner for GlobalEye, which is known as the Swing Role Surveillance System (SRSS) in the UAE.

In a statement, Anders Carp, head of Saab’s business area surveillance, said the successful flight of GlobalEye’s second aircraft marks another major step for the program. “We received the initial contract in late 2015, completed the maiden flight with the first aircraft in March 2018, and now we have the second aircraft in the air just over nine months later,” he says.

    Air, Sea & Ground

Described as a “true multi-role system” with more than 11 hours of operational endurance, Saab says the GlobalEye AEW&C system is designed to function effectively in a wide range of air, maritime, and ground surveillance missions. Furthermore, GlobalEye can “instantly switch between these roles,” Saab says, “at any time during an on-going mission.”
