Gulfstream G650ER Sets Speed Record, Completes Farthest Business Jet Flight Ever
Although the National Aeronautic Association still needs to provide its official approval, Gulfstream Aerospace reported in earlier this week that its flagship ultra-long-range Gulfstream G650ER business jet set speed and distance records in late March while flying nonstop from Singapore to Tucson, Arizona. The effort comes just weeks after Bombardier’s Global 7500 flew 8,152 nautical miles (15,097.5 kilometers) nonstop (also from Singapore to Tucson) to set a speed record and completed what Bombardier claimed then was the longest mission ever for a purpose-built business jet.
Making History
The G650ER’s recent record-breaking flight, which occurred March 29, saw the jet flying at an average speed of 597 mph (960 km/h) across 8,379 nautical miles (15,518 kilometers), or roughly 227 nautical miles longer than the Global 7500’s trek. The G650ER’s flight also clocked in at 44 minutes faster than the Global 7500’s. Gulfstream does note that “speed for all records is determined by great circle distance,” meaning 7,990 nautical miles (14,797 kilometers) for this record. “The actual distance flown by the Gulfstream G650ER was 8,379 nm/15,518 km at an average speed of 626 mph/1,007 km/h,” Gulfstream says.
Overall, the G650ER’s Singapore-Tucson flight took 15 hours and 23 minutes. The jet, which entered service in 2014, arrived in Tucson with fuel exceeding the National Business Aviation Association’s instrument flight rules reserves. Gulfstream President Mark Burns stated, “Worldwide, you just can’t go farther faster, and this record proves it.”
Approaching 100
Overall, the G650ER and its G650 sibling have charted 90 speed records to date. Worldwide, Gulfstream says there are 350 G650 and G650ER aircraft in service.
