Gulfstream’s G650ER, G650, G550, G500, G280 & G450 All Now Approved For Rollout & Touchdown Using EFVS
As Gulfstream Senior Vice President of Innovation, Engineering, and Flight Colin Miller explains, a business jet with an Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) “greatly reduces the possibility of runway incidents, puts aircraft and passengers on the ground faster, and saves fuel.” With recent approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for Gulfstream’s flagship G650ER, G650, G550, and discontinued G450 for touchdown and rollout using EFVS, roughly 1,500 in-service Gulfstream aircraft now have the operational capability to enhance operational efficiency and safety, Miller says.
Enhancing Safety
Gulfstream announced the FAA approval for touchdown and rollout using EFVS in mid-June. The company notes that it expects its new 19-passenger G600 large-cabin business jet to receive certification for operational ability after receiving its type certification, which could occur before the end of June. Previously, Gulfstream’s new clean-sheet, 19-passenger G500 was approved for the ability in December 2018, while the super-midsize G280 received the same approval in April 2019.
As Gulfstream explains, an EFVS comprises an EVS, or a cooled forward-looking infrared camera, and a head-up display (HUD) working jointly. An operator with the necessary training, a letter of authorization from the FAA, and the required EVS equipment can use EVS imagery on the HUD to complete landings without the need for “natural vision” to view the runway. Gulfstream adds that “EFVS enhances safety by allowing pilots to land at airports in limited visibility because of haze, smog, smoke, fog, or darkness, helping to minimize delays and rerouting.”
Standard & Optional Availability
For those considering acquiring a new or used Gulfstream business jet, the company notes that all its in-production large-cabin jets come standard with EFVS. (The G450 also included EFVS as a standard feature.) The 10-passenger G280 offers the feature as an option.
