The world’s passenger and freighter aircraft fleet is set to more than double from 23,000 to almost 48,000 by 2038, according to a forecast from Airbus. The company estimates that with traffic growing at 4.3% annually, 550,000 new pilots and 640,000 new technicians will be needed as well. Within that forecasted fleet of 47,680 aircraft, Airbus estimates 39,210 new and 8,470 existing aircraft. The company says by updating fleets with the latest fuel-efficient aircraft such as the A220, A320neo Family, A330neo, and A350, it will contribute to the objective of carbon neutral growth while connecting more people globally.

    Air Traffic Doubled

Air traffic has more than doubled since 2000 and increasingly plays a key role in connecting large population areas, especially in emerging markets, the company says. Developments in superior fuel efficiency are further driving demand to replace existing, less fuel-efficient aircraft. Of the 39,210 new aircraft Airbus estimates are needed, it says 25,000 are to support growth in air traffic while 14,210 are to replace older models.

“The 4% annual growth reflects the resilient nature of aviation, weathering short-term economic shocks and geo-political disturbances. Economies thrive on air transportation. People and goods want to connect,” says Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International. “Globally, commercial aviation stimulates GDP growth and supports 65 million livelihoods, demonstrating the immense benefits our business brings to all societies and global trade.”
