Bombardier is ending 2019 and the decade with a bang. In late December, the commercial and business jet manufacturer announced its new 17-passenger Global 6500 and 16-passenger Global 5500 have both received Federal Aviation Administration certification. The jets previously earned their EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) and Transport Canada type certifications in October and September, respectively.

    Take A (Nuage) Seat

After entering service in September, the Global 6500 made its worldwide debut in October at the NBAA-BACE (National Business Aviation Association—Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition) in Las Vegas. Along the way toward earning its FAA certification, meanwhile, the Global 5500 had its flight range increased by 200 nautical miles (370.4 kilometers) to 5,900 nautical miles (10,926 kilometers) flying at Mach 0.85. That’s 700 nautical miles (1,296 kilometers) more than its closest and smaller competitor, Bombardier says. The Global 6500 offers a 6,600-nautical-mile (12,223-kilometer) flight range.

Both jets feature what Michel Ouellette, Bombardier Aviation senior vice president, program management and engineering, says is the “largest cabin in their respective classes.” The cabin pairs with “breakthrough design attributes and unique expressions of comfort, control, and the smoothest ride.” Design features include a luxury-centric and patented Nuage seat the company calls the “first new seating architecture in business aviation in more than 30 years.” An included Nuage chaise, meanwhile, is described as the sector’s “only available lounge chair that converts into a flat surface for sleeping or banquet-style dinning around the conference grouping table.”

    Feel The Burn

The Global 5500 and Global 6500 both use custom-designed Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engines that Bombardier says feature enhanced aerodynamics, blade cooling, and advanced engine health-monitoring systems. Bombardier also claims that compared to the Global 5000 and Global 6000, these newer planes provide up to a 13% fuel-burn advantage, translating to “highly favorable operating costs” compared to smaller competitors that provide less range.
