Bombardier Forecast Projects Tremendous Aircraft Growth For Asia-Pacific Region
Citing a “booming middle class” and strong GDP growth, global train and aircraft manufacturer Bombardier is forecasting the Asia-Pacific region (sans greater China) will experience “tremendous growth” during the coming 20 years where the 60- to 150-seat aircraft segment is concerned. Bombardier expects the region to receive 2,050 aircraft before 2036, or 16% of the worldwide market of 12,550 aircraft valued at $820 billion. Projected deliveries include 1,050 50- to 100-seat large regional aircraft and 1,000 100- to 150-seat small single-aisle aircraft.
Tripling Up
In a statement, Francois Cognard, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft vice president of sales, Asia-Pacific, said growth factors in the Asia-Pacific region should triple passenger traffic in the next two decades. “Due to the demand for more frequencies and more city pairs to increase connectivity between smaller communities, there is a great opportunity to continue to support the expected growth with high-performing regional and small single-aisle aircraft,” he said.
Bombardier expects the region’s demand for domestic and regional connectivity will mean the fastest traffic growth will occur in small- and medium-sized cities with “challenging” airports. Of all routes flown currently in the region, Bombardier states, more than 60% have demand for fewer than 150 passengers per day. By 2036, Bombardier forecasts intra-regional traffic will make up 80% of all Asia-Pacific demand, and most passengers will take short-haul flights totaling less than 500 nautical miles (925 kilometers).
Filling The Need
Bombardier notes that 40-plus operators in the region now fly or will soon fly 300 of its regional small single-aisle aircraft. Of these, 27 operate roughly 260 Bombardier Q Series turboprops, adding that its Q400 model is the only turboprop capable of seating up to 90 passengers. Elsewhere, Bombardier states that 50 of its CRJ Series aircraft now serve the region via 13 operators. The company developed its new C Series aircraft to serve the emerging 100- to 150-seat segment falling between large regional jets and large single-aisle aircraft, it states.
