Gulfstream G280 Jet Continues Breaking City-Pair Records

Gulfstream Aerospace’s super midsize G280 jet had already racked up more than 60 city-pair records since entering service in 2012. Recent flights the G280 made involving touchdowns in Africa and Puerto Rico, however, resulted in three new city-pair records for the aircraft. A subsidiary of General Dynamics, Gulfstream has delivered more than 2,800 aircraft since launching in 1958, and along with the G280, Gulfstream aircraft for sale includes the G450, G550, G650, and G650ER.

    Making Good Speed

Powering on two Honeywell HTF7250G engines, the 10-passenger G280 (the aircraft sleeps five) set the third of its three most recent city-pair records in December flying from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria to Amílcar Cabral International Airport in Cape Verde in 3:52 (hours:minutes), traveling the 1,858-nautical-mile (3,441-kilometer) journey at an average Mach 0.84 speed.

That same day, Gulfstream reports the G280 traveled from Cape Verde to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at an average Mach 0.82 speed to complete the 3,011-nautical-mile (5,576-kilometer) flight in 6:40 (hours:minutes). Earlier in December, the G280 flew from Lanseria International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in 5:32 (hours: minutes), traveling at an average speed of Mach 0.83 across the 2,596-nautical-mile (4,808-kilometer) trip.

Mark Burns, Gulfstream president, credited the G280’s advanced wing, robust airframe, and Honeywell engines as helping produce performance abilities that other aircraft in its class are unable to match. “The Cape Verde to Puerto Rico flight shows how fast the G280 can connect Africa with the Caribbean, even while flying into strong winter headwinds,” he pointed out.

    Another One In The Book

Following pending approval from the U.S. National Aeronautic Association, Gulfstream plans to send the G280’s latest city-pair records to the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale in Switzerland to recognize the flights as world records.

Able to fly four passengers 3,600 nautical miles (6,667 kilometers) at Mach 0.80, the G280 can actually seat up to 10 passengers. The aircraft provides a maximum takeoff weight of 39,000 pounds (17,690 kilograms) and can operate at steep-approach airports. Further, Gulfstream credits the aircraft Honeywell engines as enabling the aircraft to climb directly to 43,000 feet (13,106 meters) in less than 23 minutes to provide what Gulfstream cites as best-in-class efficiency while consuming up to 12% less fuel compared to competitors. The aircraft has a maximum cruise altitude of 45,000 feet (13,716 meters).
