Gulfstream Plans 2020 Opening For New MRO Facility Near London
TAG Farnborough Airport, located southwest of London near Farnborough, will be the site of a new purpose-built facility Gulfstream Aerospace will use to expand its MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) operation in the London area. The company’s current MRO site in the area is at London Luton Airport. Gulfstream credits growth of its fleet and the increased size of its newer aircraft as necessitating additional capacity and growth of its service network. Gulfstream plans to have the Farnborough-located MRO operational by Q3 2020.
Dedicated To Business Aviation
With the new MRO, Gulfstream says it is committed to maintaining a presence in the London area, noting London has the highest volume of Gulfstream traffic in Europe and is home to Gulfstream’s European Parts Distribution Center at Heathrow Airport. Gulfstream also has a sales and design center in West London’s Mayfair area. There are 225 Gulfstream aircraft based in Europe and 180 in the Middle East and Africa, according to the manufacturer.
Besides the new MRO in Farnborough, Gulfstream has announced several new MRO facilities and expansions recently, including in Van Nuys, California; Appleton, Wisconsin; and in its headquarters city of Savannah, Georgia. Derek Zimmerman, Gulfstream product support president, said in a news release that Gulfstream selected the TAG Farnborough Airport location because it’s a “London gateway airport dedicated exclusively to business aviation.” Many Gulfstream operators frequent the airport, which “offers amenities that complement our brand, with the space required for our current construction plans and future growth,” he said.
Benefiting The Region
Gulfstream, a General Dynamics company, estimates the new MRO facility will span about 180,000 to 220,000 square feet (16,723 to 20,439 square meters) and include office and shop space, customer areas, and a hangar accommodating up to 13 large-cabin aircraft. “Significant” ramp space and a parking area are also planned. Gulfstream’s current MRO at London Luton Airport contains more than 85,000 square feet (7,897 square meters) of hangar, office, and parts warehouse space but has seen a considerable increase in on-site traffic and road trips for several years, according to Gulfstream.
Gulfstream will replicate its current abilities at the Luton MRO—including maintenance authorizations from the Federal Aviation Administration, European Aviation Safety Agency, and 20-plus other civil aviation authorities—at Farnborough.
