Gulfstream Delivers G550 Medevac Aircraft For Disaster Relief & Air Rescue Services

Gulfstream Aerospace has designed and delivered a modified G550 to the Beijing Red Cross Emergency Medical Center for use as a medevac craft. Gulfstream President Mark Burns says the plane will forever alter the “expectations for medevac support.” Featuring an “unprecedented degree of technological innovation,” Gulfstream says the modified G550 promises to “revolutionize in-flight medical care.”

Speed & Range

Gulfstream officials presented the customized G550 to Beijing Red Cross officials during a recent ceremony at Gulfstream’s headquarters in Savanah, Georgia. The Red Cross center has also expressed interest in obtaining a Gulfstream G650ER (extended range) to serve in medical care missions. “With the G650ER’s speed and range, medical care will arrive faster,” Burns says.

Introduced in 2003, the 19-passenger G550 is a Robert J. Collier Trophy winner that can fly nonstop from Beijing to New York or London with its 6,750-nautical-mile (12,501-kilometer) range. The aircraft can also take off and land at short-field, high-altitude airports. The G650ER, meanwhile, is Gulfstream’s flagship model; the company claims it’s the “fastest large-cabin, non-supersonic aircraft to fly around the world.” The G650ER offers a range of 7,500 nautical miles (13,890 kilometers) at Mach 0.85. Gulfstream says there are more than 560 G550s and 300-plus G650ERs in service globally.

Artistically Speaking

Burns says the modified G550 the Red Cross received “showcases the art of the possible,” and that it will transform the industry. The Red Cross will use the aircraft to support disaster relief and air rescue services, which will benefit from its dedicated medical bay with 360-degree in-flight patient access, advanced life support capabilities, a bed that can accommodate an infant incubator, X-ray viewing equipment, and foldout seats for nurses to provide individual care.
