Bombardier Customer Changes Order, Converts Jets To Turboprops

    Posted On: August 30, 2018

CIB Leasing recently converted a previous order for 10 Bombardier CRJ Series regional jets to five 90-seat Q400 turboprop aircraft and five Bombardier CRJ900 jets. The converted purchase agreement is worth $420 million based on current list prices. (Photo courtesy of Bombardier.)

An order that Beijing-based CIB Leasing previously placed with Bombardier for 10 CRJ Series aircraft has been converted to five 90-seat Bombardier twin-engine Q400 turboprops and five Bombardier CRJ900 regional jets. That according to Bombardier, which manufactures the Q Series of turboprops the Q400 belongs to, as well as CRJ Series commercial jets and Learjet, Challenger, and Global business jets.

    Growth & Expansion

Based on list prices, the converted purchase agreement between Bombardier and CIB Leasing is valued at roughly $420 million. Fred Cromer, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft president, said Bombardier is “pleased to see that more 90-seat Q400 turboprop will be available” in the Asia region as it works with CIB leasing to uncover market opportunities for regional fleet growth and network expansion. “With 15 percent lower cost per seat than the 78-seat [Q400] version, our 90-seat turboprop aircraft has unique capabilities and unbeatable productivity, and we are confident that our leasing partner and potential operators will extract tremendous value from it,” Cromer says. In addition to 78- and 90-seat versions, the Q400 is also available in an 86-seat capacity.

    The Q400

Introduced in 2016, the Q400 is the Q Series’ newest member. The aircraft is reportedly in use in 40 countries by 60-plus operators. The jet offers a 1,100-nautical mile (2,037-kilometer) range, 360-KTAS (667-kilometer-per-hour) maximum cruise speed, and ability to operate at airfields at elevations reaching 14,000 feet (4,267 meters).
