Bombardier Upgrading New & In-Service Learjet 70 & 75 Garmin G5000 Avionics Suite

Bombardier says its Learjet 75 and Learjet 70 business jets already offer one of the most generous, advanced cockpits in the light jet category, but that a recently announced upgrade will introduce a host of “workload-reducing improvements” aimed to enhance performance in several areas. The company has begun offering an upgrade to the Garmin G5000 avionics suite powering the Bombardier Vision flight deck in those models.

    Future-Proofing

The Garmin G5000 avionics suite upgrade is available in new Learjet 70 and 75 models and as a retrofit upgrade to in-service models. Although Bombardier is still flight-testing the new system, it says the upgrade will improve performance abilities and set the stage for future technological enhancements. An optional FANS (Future Air Navigation System) 1/A+ upgrade, for example, will enable operators to “access the most efficient and favorable routes” while preparing the jets for “modernized airspace requirements” and delivering efficiency-related benefits expected to lower operating costs.

The workload-reducing improvements specifically include better climb, cruise, and descent vertical navigation as well as enhanced takeoff and landing performance calculations. Noting that avionics is “one of the fastest-evolving systems on a modern aircraft,” Peter Likoray, Bombard Business Aircraft senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, says the Garmin G5000 upgrade will keep Learjet 70 and 75 business jet owners ahead of the curve.

    Learjet Traits

Bombardier bills the Learjet 70 as the “most trusted light-midsized business aircraft platform” among Fortune 50 and 500 companies, and says the Learjet 75 sets the “standard by bringing large jet features to a light jet platform.” The jets’ current Garmin G5000 package features three high-resolution displays with touch-screen ability, the Synthetic Vision System, Dual Flight Management System, graphical flight planning, advanced weather radar, and datalink abilities.

The Learjet 70 and 75 both include Honeywell TFE731-40BR engines, operate at a maximum 51,000-foot (15,545-meter) altitude, and offer a Mach 0.81 top speed and 0.79 Mach cruise speed. The 70 seats up to seven and has a maximum range of 2,060 nautical miles (3,815 kilometers) with six passengers. The Learjet 75 can carry up to nine passengers and has a maximum range of 2,040 nautical miles (3,778 kilometers).
