Airbus Misses Target For Aircraft Deliveries In 2018 But Sets Record
Global commercial aircraft manufacturer Airbus recently announced that it delivered a company record 800 aircraft to 93 customers in 2018, up 11% from 2017’s 718 deliveries. While Airbus notes it has increased its commercial aircraft deliveries annually, its 2018 deliveries fell short of Boeing’s 806 deliveries for 2018. As The Wall Street Journal reported, both companies missed their 2018 delivery targets. Boeing had projected 810 to 815 deliveries, while Airbus scaled back its target in October by roughly 20 aircraft due to supplier- and production-related issues.
The Specifics
Of its 800 deliveries last year, Airbus says the total included 20 A220s (formerly the Bombardier C Series aircraft family), 626 A320 family aircraft, 49 A330s, 93 A350 XWBs, and 12 A380s. Elsewhere, while Airbus says its commercial aircraft backlog reached a “new industry record” of 7,577 aircraft in 2018, the 747 net orders it took last year were down from 2017’s 1,109.
Guillaume Faury, president of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, says that “despite significant operational challenges,” Airbus continued ramping up production last year to achieve a delivery record. “I am equally pleased about the healthy order intake, as it shows the underlying strength of the commercial aircraft market and the trust our customers are placing in us,” Faury says.
Assembly Line Stats
In addition to its final assembly lines in Germany, France, China, and Mobile, Alabama, Airbus added a line in Mirabel, Canada, last year. The company says its U.S. and Chinese lines in particular made notable contributions to help it increase deliveries last year. While the Mobile line made its 100th delivery of an A320 family aircraft and now produces four-plus units monthly, the Tianjin line saw its 400th A320 delivery last year.
