Boeing Reports 806 Commercial Jet Deliveries, 898 Net Orders Valued At Nearly $144 Billion In 2018
Despite reported supplier-related issues, Boeing delivered a company record 806 airplanes in 2018, topping 2017’s 763, also a record. Boeing says it took 893 net orders last year valued at $143.7 billion based on list prices. The order total, however, fell slightly short of Boeing’s 810 to 815 target, as reported in the Wall Street Journal. Boeing’s order total notably tops Airbus’ 800-delivery total (a company record) for 2018. Airbus’ 747 net orders last year, however, were down from 1,109 for 2017.
Living The Dream
Of its 2018 delivery total, Boeing says 69 came in December for its 737 aircraft. Boeing, which reports a 7-year order backlog, says it picked up 737 production in mid-2018 to reach a rate of 52 deliveries per month. Of the 580 deliveries of 737 aircraft Boeing made last year, about half stemmed from the “more fuel-efficient and longer-range” MAX family.
Elsewhere, Boeing’s 2018 deliveries included 145 Dreamliner aircraft. Boeing says in 2018, it “continued to build the 787 Dreamliner at the highest production rate for a twin-aisle airplane,” including to “support high demand” for the jet. Overall, Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes president and CEO, credits Boeing’s teammates for helping raise the bar in 2018. “In a dynamic year, our production discipline and our supplier partners helped us build and deliver more airplanes than ever before to satisfy the strong demand for air travel across the globe," he says.
Taking Orders
Of the 893 net orders Boeing took last year, 203 came in December alone. While Boeing expanded its order backlog in nearly all its programs, it “showed particular strength in the twin-aisle category,” the company says, taking 218 orders for wide-body aircraft. “The 787 Dreamliner extended its status as the fastest-selling twin-aisle jet in history with 109 orders last year, or about 1,400 since the program launched,” Boeing stated. Elsewhere, Boeing took 51 orders for its 777 family and 675 for 737 MAX aircraft.
