Bombardier Global 7500 Completes First Ever Nonstop Flight From London City Airport To Los Angeles

    Posted On: May 20, 2019

Bombardier’s Global 7500 recently flew from London City Airport in London to Van Nuys, California, to complete what Bombardier says is the first ever nonstop flight between the cities. The test vehicle that completed the feat is known as “The Masterpiece.” (Photo courtesy of Bombardier.)

It’s fitting that the Bombardier Global 7500 model that recently completed the first ever nonstop flight from London City Airport to the Van Nuys airport near Los Angeles is named “The Masterpiece.” Also known as flight test vehicle 5 (FTV5), the aircraft achieved the feat May 11th departing from London City Airport, known for its challenging steep-approach and short-field performance requirements, and for serving London’s key financial center. Also fitting is The Masterpiece was at London City completing the Global 7500’s Transport Canada steep-approach certification flight test campaign.

    World’s Largest & Longest-Range Business Jet

Billed as “the world’s largest and longest range business jet,” the Global 7500 has set several speed and distance records this year, including business jet city-pair speed records from New York to London and Los Angeles to New York. The 19-passenger jet also flew 8,152 nautical miles (15,097.5 kilometers) nonstop from Singapore to Tucson, Arizona, in March to complete the longest mission ever for a purpose-built jet.

Weeks later, however, Gulfstream’s smaller G650ER flew about 227 nautical miles (420 kilometers) longer while flying from Singapore to Tucson. In what appears to be a veiled shot at Gulfstream, Bombardier stated its “unprecedented” Singapore-to-Tucson flight occurred while “departing as planned during its busy world-tour schedule—without the need to linger at the airfield for days on end, waiting for exponentially stronger tailwinds, as some smaller aircraft do.”

    Top Billing

The Masterpiece notably completed the London City Airport-Van Nuys flight while hauling the equivalent of a fully fitted interior and 2,440 pounds (1,107 kilograms) of additional payload, or about 11 passengers and their associated baggage. Federal Aviation Administration-certified in November and entered into service in December, the jet has a 7,700-nautical mile (14,260-kilometer) flight range and 5,800-foot (1,767.8-meter) rated takeoff and landing performance.
