Cirrus Aircraft Announces Autonomous Safe Return Autoland Technology For Company’s G2 Vision Jet

Personal aircraft manufacturer Cirrus Aircraft has introduced a “revolutionary emergency autoland system” for its G2 Vision Jet that enables passengers to push one button to put the plane in autonomous mode and land itself at the nearest appropriate airport in the event of an emergency. The announcement of the Safe Return system, which is powered by the Vision Jet’s Garmin Perspective Touch+ flight deck, comes days after Piper Aircraft introduced the same technology as powered by the Garmin G3000 avionics suite included in its new M600 SLS variant, billed as the first general aviation aircraft certified for autoland functionality.

Cirrus will begin delivering Vision Jets with Safe Return in early 2020. The company introduced the seven-seat Vision Jet in 2016 as “world’s first single-engine Personal Jet.” Deliveries of the updated G2 Vision Jet began earlier this year. In addition to Safe Return, the jet also includes Autothrottle technology that automatically adjusts aircraft speed for each flight phase and CAPS, or the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System. Of Safe Return, Cirrus says it “assumes control of the aircraft and transforms the Vision Jet into an autonomous vehicle that navigates to the nearest suitable airport for landing, communicates with air traffic control, lands, and brings the aircraft safely to a complete stop.”

Among other abilities, Safe Return analyzes terrain and datalink weather to pinpoint an airport while simultaneously starting communications with Air Traffic Control. Cirrus says the system uses all available aircraft data streams, including available fuel, for safe navigation and to transition to final approach to the runway based on ground winds. The system also automatically lowers the flaps and landing gear on final approach. Additionally, if a passenger inadvertently activates Safe Return, the pilot can deactivate it with a press of the Autopilot disconnect button.
