Bombardier Receives First Sustainable Aviation Fuel Shipment At Montreal Facilities

In late November, Bombardier took the first step in its plan to “secure long-term partnerships with fuel suppliers” in order to deploy SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) to all Bombardier global facilities. Bombardier did so by receiving is first shipment of SAF at its Montreal facilities, where it will deploy SAF to customers taking delivery of Bombardier aircraft. Avfuel Corporation delivered the shipment to Bombardier, manufacturer of commercial and business jets, including the Global 5500 and 6500. Bombardier says the shipment further reinforces its commitment to sustainable flying.

    Toward The Future

Bombardier has used SAF since 2017 at its Hartford, Connecticut, facility where it conducts customer demonstration operations. The company also uses SAF when flying its demonstration fleet to major air shows and events. Further, Bombardier says it regularly takes part in industry-related events promoting SAF usage in business aircraft.

Bombardier Aviation President David Coleal says offering SAF at a Canadian facility is just the start of what’s to come. “Bombardier is working toward ensuring that the use of these fuels becomes a standard in our day-to-day operations as we do our part to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide and meet the longstanding industry climate pledge,” he says. As an example, Coleal pointed to the new Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 engine the Bombardier Global 5500 and Global 6500 use that makes “the aircraft cleaner and more efficient, with an up to 13% fuel burn advantage, contributing to highly favorable operating costs.”

    Find Bombardier Aircraft

Bombardier notes the business aviation sector at large developed an “aggressive program” in 2009 supporting ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) climate change-related targets, including reaching carbon-neutral growth by 2020, improving fuel efficiency by 2% annually from 2010 to 2020, and cutting total CO2 emissions by half by 2050 relative to 2005. Bombardier says it has created a path to reach these goals across four pillars: technology, infrastructure and operational improvements, market-based measures, and alternative fuels.
