Diamond Aircraft Delivers New DA40 XLT Pistons To Middle Tennessee State University For Pilot Training

Middle Tennessee State University recently added six single-engine Diamond Aircraft DA40 XLT piston aircraft to its Aerospace Department. Diamond also refurbished 13 aircraft from MTSU’s overall fleet of 27 Diamond Aircraft. Bud Fischer, dean of MTSU’s College of Basic and Applied Sciences, says MTSU chooses Diamond Aircraft for “their superb maintenance record and their track record of reliable service in a busy flight-training environment.”

The MTSU Aerospace Department was launched in 1942 and now includes 17 full-time faculty members, 75 flight instructors, and about 1,000 majors. MTSU has been a Diamond Aircraft customer since the early 2000s. Noting his company’s long relationship with MTSU, Diamond Aircraft CEO Scott McFadzean says, “We are honored to continue to provide the industry’s safest training platforms for student pilots.”

MTSU says students were able to begin flying the first four planes from the recent delivery as soon as the university’s Flight Operators Center reopened following its shutdown due to COVID-19. Prior to COVID-19, MTSU had been experiencing record growth among professional pilot majors, says Nick Lenczycki, MTSU Flight Operations Center program manager. “As a result, we have been adding aircraft for the last few years,” he says.

Diamond says the DA40 XLT is an “all-around practical and versatile multi-use four-seat model.” The plane uses a bulletproof 180-horsepower Lycoming IO360M1A AVGAS engine, Garmin G1000NXi flight deck, a two-blade Hartzell metal constant-speed propeller, and an all-composite airframe.
