Cessna Turbo Skylane T182T Returns To Production With Turbo-Charged Lycoming Engine

Textron Aviation, owner of the Cessna brand, recently announced it’s returning the Cessna Turbo Skylane T182T to production. The plane features a turbo-charged 235-horsepower Lycoming TIO-540-AK1A engine. (Photo courtesy of Textron Aviation.)

Cessna’s Turbo Skylane T182T single-engine piston is back and better than before. Originally introduced in 2001, Textron Aviation-owned Cessna paused construction of the plane in 2013. Earlier this month, however, the aircraft manufacturer announced that the high-wing Skylane T182T returns to the Cessna piston lineup with a more powerful turbo-charged, 235-horsepower (173-kilowatt) Lycoming TIO-540-AK1A engine. The aircraft also features Garmin G1000 NXi avionics and a new Garmin GI 275 electronic flight instrument. Available in a four-passenger configuration, the Skylane T182T also features contoured, ergonomically designed Luxor 2 seats with Alcantara fabric inserts.

    Turbo-Charged Performance

Cessna’s Skylane model family celebrated its 65th anniversary last year. More than 23,000 Skylanes have been delivered worldwide to business travelers, flight schools, civil operators, and cadet organizations. The Skylane T182T’s new, 235-HP Lycoming power plant is a descendant of the original Skylane’s 230-HP Lycoming IO-540-AB1A4 engine. The newest Skylane can maintain its 235-HP output up to a 20,000-foot (6,096-metre) ceiling, and it can climb at 1,040 ft (317 m) per minute.

The Skylane T182T’s engine is outfitted with a Hartzell Engine Technologies turbocharger and is paired with a heated, constant-speed three-blade metal McCauley propeller. Cessna says the engine’s extra power will come in particularly handy when crossing mountains or cruising at higher altitudes. The aircraft has a built-in oxygen system for pilots and passengers to use at such heights.

    Better Than Ever

New engine aside, the Skylane T182T’s most notable feature is arguably its G1000 NXi avionics, which boast improved graphics, faster hardware, new wireless connectivity, and more. The new Garmin GI 275 electronic standby boasts a modern glass touchscreen display but lets users keep the classic interface for standby instruments. The flight deck is equipped with Electronic Stability and Protection (ESP) and Underspeed Protection (USP), and offers options such as satellite weather tracking, text messaging, and voice calls.

The aircraft also includes dual LED landing and recognition lights with pulse-recognition technology, a tricycle landing system, and advanced cabin soundproofing. The cabin’s panoramic, wraparound windows provide excellent all-around visibility, and the high-wing design also enhances visibility while simplifying entry and egress.

    Hop Aboard

The Skylane T182T can take off in less than 800 ft (244 m) with a nearly 1,000-pound (453.5-kilogram) maximum useful load. The plane has a 200-lb (90.7-kg) baggage allowance, and Cessna says accessing the 32 cubic feet (0.90 cubic metres) of cargo area is now easier. The aircraft has a maximum cruise speed of 165 KTAS and a maximum flight range of 970 nautical miles (1,798 kilometres). The turbo-charged Skylane measures 29 ft (8.8 m) long by 9.2 ft (2.8 m) high, with a 36-ft (11-m) wingspan.
